Towards an Open, Universal and Comprehensive Building Energy Performance Certification
OpenBEP4EU: Smarter, Simpler, and More Accessible Energy Performance Certificates for Europe
The OpenBEP4EU project is developing an open-source, standardised engine for generating Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs), backed by a centralised data hub. Our mission is to streamline EPC calculation and verification across Europe, making it more transparent, affordable, and user-friendly.
Whether you're a homeowner, architect, policymaker, or energy consultant, OpenBEP4EU provides practical tools to improve building energy performance.
Transforming Building Assessment
EPCs measure how energy-efficient a building is, but current systems are often inconsistent, costly, and difficult to interpret.
OpenBEP4EU addresses these challenges by:
- Reducing EPC production costs
- Improving consistency and accuracy
- Unlocking value through energy savings, comfort, property value, and health
- Making energy performance understandable and actionable
Supporting European Sustainability Goals
Aligned with the New European Bauhaus Initiative, OpenBEP4EU promotes buildings that are not only energy-efficient but also sustainable, inclusive, and aesthetically enriching. By delivering transparent and comparable data, we help shape a built environment that reflects Europe’s social and environmental priorities.
A Future-Ready EPC Framework
At the core of OpenBEP4EU is the EU Kernel EPC Engine, built on the ISO 52000 series of standards. This harmonised software foundation enables next-generation EPCs to be deployed consistently across EU Member States.
We make energy performance data accessible to key stakeholders, including property owners, investors, and energy service providers, empowering:
- New financial products
- Smarter renovation strategies
- More effective policy-making
Key project components include:
- EPC Support Team: A dedicated team to help stakeholders adopt and implement the system.
- Sustainable Design Data Hub: A collaborative platform to explore and share building performance data, supporting sustainable architecture in line with Bauhaus principles.
Built on Trust and Transparency
OpenBEP4EU follows the principles of data sovereignty and transparency, aligned with the Common European Energy Data Space, ensuring participants retain control and confidence in their data.
To ensure relevance and practical impact, the system will be piloted in five diverse European regions in Greece, Denmark, Spain, Cyprus, and Switzerland, chosen for their varied climates, building types, and EPC frameworks.
